Pseudo liquor sales report

A pilot research study commissioned by OLGR has confirmed that licensed venues need to be more vigilant about ID checks. This independent research, undertaken in June/July this year, found 54% of pseudo purchasers who looked underage were not asked for ID when they attempted to purchase alcohol. Also, only 58% of venues audited during the research had underage liquor law signage that was clearly visible. A total of 142 audits of off-licence (retail) outlets in five NSW local government areas (metro and regional) were conducted during the pilot.

The methodology used for this NSW pilot research is comparable to research conducted in Perth WA (2006) where 77% of sales occurred without ID checks, and research in Auckland NZ where 61% of sales without ID checks were recorded. Download the Pseudo liquor sales report.

Licensees are reminded that our Office has produced an ID Checking Guide to assist staff in licensed venues to check IDs as a strategy to prevent minors purchasing alcohol.
