IPART report into gambling, and the government's response

The IPART Report

In July 2003, the Government engaged the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to undertake a review of various problem gambling measures in NSW. The review sought to determine the impact of existing responsible gambling measures - as well as new proposals designed to encourage responsible gambling - by examining initiatives in Australia and overseas.

Specifically, the review was asked to consider the effect of responsible gambling measures on recreational gamblers, problem gamblers, industry, community services, employment, support for community projects, and recreational and social opportunities.

The terms of reference for the review required IPART to assess:

The report of that review - entitled Gambling: Promoting a Culture of Responsibility - was released on 23 July 2004. In total, IPART made 108 recommendations within the following chapter headings:

The NSW Government Response

On 19 May 2005, the NSW Government released its response to the 108 recommendations in the IPART report, and a further five recommendations made in IPART's consequential report on governance issues.
